Escaping Milton With Your Pet

Escaping Milton With Your Pet

on

Right off the heals of CAT 4 Hurricane Helene’s landfall a week and a half ago in Florida’s Big Bend, Major Hurricane Milton is setting its eyes for Central Florida’s west coast. In evacuation situations, so many leave their pets behind in the misconception they can’t take them too. If it’s not safe for you to stay, it not safe for them! DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PETS. They WILL NOT survive on their own.

Here is what you need to know:

  • Pet policies are being waived in most Florida hotels, allowing you to bring your pet with you. For a list of hotels with waived pet policies visit Myfloridalicense.com/emergency
  • many local shelters accept pets as well. For a list of local shelters and required items you need to bring visit floridadisaster.org. Remember you are responsible for supplies for yourself and your pet

What to Bring

Just as you need supplies, your pet does too! Pack:

  • Food
  • Bowls
  • Extra water for your pet
  • Important vet information in a waterproof Ziploc bag
  • Pictures and any identification of your dog in case you’re separated
  • Microchip information
  • Favorite toy for anxiety
  • Collar/harness & leash
  • Dog bed
  • Any medication they are taking.

Upon Returning

After the storm there will be debris everywhere. Storm surge will push sand, mud, and various sediment on top of a lot of debris you may not see. DO NOT let your dog walk around in a debris field. Their paws are not shoes and you do not know what is underneath their feet.
